We’ve recently returned from blackhat (Las Vegas), where we were lucky enough to catch a session with Michael Bazzell, the technical mastermind behind Mr. Robot and one of the world’s leaders when it comes to OSINT.
Michael Bazzell spent 18 years as a law enforcement officer with a rank of Detective. During the majority of that time, he was assigned to the FBI’s Cyber Crimes Task Force where he focused on “Hackers” and various computer crime investigations. He has trained thousands of individuals employed by state and federal agencies, as well as the private sector, in the use of his investigative techniques. He has also taught several college courses including Ethical Hacking, Computer Forensics, and Computer Crime Investigation. Publishing a couple of best sellers – “Open Source Intelligence Techniques” and “Hiding from the Internet”, which are used by several government agencies as training manuals for intelligence gathering and securing personal information.
In his latest work, Michael is the technical adviser to Mr. Robot, making sure all scenes are as accurate as possible. In a recent interview to Vulture.com, Michael talks about the importance of the show’s accuracy, which I can vouch for based on the water cooler chatter we have going on in our office. Our CyberOPS team are taken away by the show’s details and accuracy!
In his interview, Michael also talks about how the timing for this type of show could not have been better, with more and more cyber-attacks hitting the headlines daily. “You don’t watch a newscast every day without some reference to a breach or stolen data or hackers, so we’re overdue for a show to explain how this world works.”.
